Description

Two thousand years ago, one language ruled the Silk Road — spoken by merchants from China to Byzantium. Today it survives in just a handful of villages high in the mountains of Tajikistan, spoken by a few thousand people the world has almost entirely forgotten. They're called the Yaghnobis, and their language, Yaghnobi, is the last living descendant of Sogdian — the trade tongue of the ancient Silk Road. Cut off for over a thousand years in an isolated mountain valley, they preserved it long after the great cities of Sogdiana had abandoned it for Arabic and Persian. Then in 1970, Soviet authorities forcibly relocated the entire population to lowland cotton plantations — and nearly erased in a generation what a thousand years of isolation had preserved. This is the story of the last living voice of the Silk Road, and the families now walking back into the mountains to save it. 00:00 The empire built on trade, not conquest 01:02 The Sogdians: merchants of the Silk Road 02:53 The valley time forgot 04:31 The Soviet relocation 06:08 Going home 08:09 The last living words of Sogdian #SilkRoad #LostLanguages #Tajikistan #AncientHistory #Sogdians
