Description
No DNA study has matched Bajan surnames to named African peoples — but two independent genetic studies, a set of colonial registers and the Bajan language itself reveal a great deal about where Barbadian ancestry comes from, and exactly which documents can lead you to your own family.
In this video we walk through the real research and the real records:
📌 The 2008 Annals of Human Genetics study: about 89.6% West African, 10.2% European and 0.2% Native American ancestry in the Barbadian sample (28 markers, 298 people across three islands)
📌 The 2015 Oxford-led Nature Communications study: African ancestry of up to 87% in current-day Barbados, and a Yoruba-related signal as the largest African contribution across the Americas
📌 The 2013 PLOS Genetics finding of two African influxes into the Caribbean (coastal West Africa, then West Central Africa)
📌 Barbados in numbers: about 20,000 people of African descent in 1655, 33,184 enslaved in 1673, 46,502 in 1684
📌 Why the 1817 figure — about 7% African-born in Barbados vs 36% in Jamaica and 44% in Trinidad (cited, not independently verified) — makes Barbados unusually Creole
📌 Bajan words with West African roots, the largest share traced to Igbo (wunna, obeah, Bim, eye-water) and Akan (duppy)
📌 The slave registers (T 71), the compensation lists presented to Parliament on 16 January 1838, and how surnames were really acquired
📌 Bussa's rebellion of 1816
Every claim in this video is drawn from published research and documented history. Where we could not verify a number or found no study, we say so.
