Australia 1999 Cold Case Solved - The Clue Sat in Evidence for 14 Years

On the morning of July 29th, 1999, a 17-year-old girl was hitchhiking along a remote road in Western Australia, seen by multiple drivers, and then gone within minutes. No bag, no jacket, no sign of a struggle anywhere on an open road where there was nowhere to disappear to. Police seized a ute seat cover from a man living beside that road in the first weeks, examined it, found nothing, and put it in a bag on a shelf. Fourteen years and 38 days later a forensic scientist took it out, laid it face up on a bench, and immediately saw one of the earrings Hayley had bought two days before she vanished, its hook bent the way a hook bends when it comes out of an ear the wrong way. It took two trials to convict him. He has never said where she is.
