Description

On Melbourne Cup Day in 1984, a 6-year-old girl in Preston was given 90 cents and sent 140 metres up the road to buy a bag of sugar. She bought it, walked back out onto a main street in the middle of the afternoon, and was found in a gutter before sunrise. Two days later detectives sat across from a man who lived 650 metres away, drove the car witnesses described, and had already served 12 years for attacking a schoolgirl with a hammer. They accepted his alibi and nobody knocked on that door again for 32 years. In 2016 two detectives drove back to his house and asked him for a mouth swab. He said yes. The answer had been in a filing cabinet since the third day of the investigation.
