Description

John Harun Mwao was a billionaire businessman, politician, former police marksman — and a man the United States government officially named an international drug kingpin. In June 2011, Washington designated Mwao under the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Act and froze an estimated $750 million in assets. He was accused of having links to an international cocaine and heroin trafficking network involving Colombian traffickers. But Mwao denied the allegations. Then, just seven days after the U.S. designation, six bullets tore through his luxury Range Rover on a Nairobi street. Mwao wasn't inside. Police soon began questioning whether the shooting was actually an assassination attempt — or something much more unusual. And two days later, a forensic detective examining the vehicle suddenly collapsed and died under mysterious circumstances. But who was John Harun Mwao before he became one of Kenya's most controversial billionaires? From representing Kenya at the Olympics as an elite marksman, to building a huge business empire, challenging President Daniel arap Moi in court, leading Kenya's anti-corruption agency, entering Parliament, and eventually being accused by the United States of protecting an international drug empire — Mwao's story is filled with power, money, politics and unanswered questions. In this Dark Hour Docs documentary, we examine the rise of John Harun Mwao, the cocaine scandal that surrounded his businesses, his designation as a global drug kingpin, the mysterious shooting of his Range Rover, and why he never went to prison over the allegations. Was John Harun Mwao really a billionaire drug kingpin — or was he the target of allegations he could never completely escape? Watch until the end and decide for yourself. ⚠️ This documentary discusses allegations and historical claims involving real people. Allegations are presented as allegations and should not be interpreted as proof of criminal conduct or conviction.
