Description
Three controversial Kenyan clerics. Three assassinations. One disturbing pattern.
On August 27th, 2012, Sheikh Aboud Rogo was gunned down in a shocking drive-by shooting along the Mombasa-Malindi highway. His death triggered days of deadly riots across Mombasa and raised a question that remains controversial to this day: who wanted him dead?
Rogo had spent years at the centre of Kenya's most heated debates surrounding radicalisation, Al-Shabaab and the government's fight against extremism. He had been arrested, accused of supporting militants, sanctioned by the United States and placed on a UN sanctions list.
But his assassination was only the beginning.
Just over a year later, Sheikh Ibrahim Omar was killed in another drive-by shooting along the same coastal highway. Then, in 2014, another outspoken cleric, Abubakar Shariff — better known as Makaburi — was also assassinated.
Three controversial clerics. Three killings. And remarkably similar methods.
Were these murders connected? Was there a government campaign targeting radical clerics? Or was something happening within the extremist networks themselves?
In this Dark Hour Docs gangland investigation, we examine the rise of Aboud Rogo, the allegations surrounding him, his assassination, the deaths that followed, and the mystery surrounding who was eliminating Kenya's most controversial clerics.
⚠️ This documentary discusses terrorism, violent crime, assassinations and religious extremism. It is presented for historical and documentary purposes and does not endorse or glorify extremist organisations or violence.
What do you think happened to these three clerics?
