The Mechanic Who Became Kenya’s Most Feared Hitman

Simon Matheri Ikere was once known as a mechanic from Gashie. But behind the ordinary profession was a man who would become one of Kenya’s most wanted and feared criminals. In the mid-2000s, Matheri and his gang were linked to a string of violent robberies, carjackings and killings across Nairobi and surrounding areas. His name became nationally known after the January 2007 killing of two American missionaries, followed by a series of deadly attacks that triggered one of the country’s biggest manhunts. Police eventually tracked Matheri to a hideout in Athi River, where more than 100 heavily armed officers surrounded the compound. What happened after he surrendered remains one of the most controversial chapters of the case. How did a mechanic become an alleged contract killer? How did he stay ahead of Kenyan police for so long? And what really happened during his final moments? This is the story of Simon Matheri Ikere — Gacie’s Most Wanted. This is Dark Hour Docs.
