Description
The Robber Who Escaped Prison 3 Times — Then Refused to Leave
In the 1990s, Nairobi was gripped by a wave of violent robberies, and at the centre of it all was Edward Maina Shimoli — a criminal who became known as “The Jackal.”
From the streets of Ofafa Jericho to some of Nairobi's most notorious bank robberies, Shimoli built a gang that repeatedly outsmarted the police. He was linked to murders, violent robberies and major heists, including the infamous Bank of Baroda and Standard Chartered robberies.
But what made Shimoli truly extraordinary was his ability to escape.
He escaped from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison three times, repeatedly humiliating the security officers tasked with keeping him behind bars. Even after being captured, shot and placed under heavy guard, his network found ways to get him back out.
Yet the most mysterious part of his story came years later.
When Shimoli was finally released from prison in 2007, he reportedly refused to leave, claiming that his life was in danger. Authorities forced him out.
Months later, he was found dead along Kangundo Road, his hands tied and his body riddled with bullets.
Was Edward Shimoli truly trying to reform, or did he know something that powerful people wanted buried?
This is the story of one of the most feared criminals in Nairobi Gangland history.
