The Three Criminals Who Took Over Nairobi After Muhindi

In 1995, the death of the notorious criminal Muhindi was supposed to bring an end to one of Nairobi’s most dangerous criminal networks. Instead, it created three new threats. Gerald Wambugu Munyoria, known as Wanugu, Anthony Ngugi Kanagi, known as Washosho, and Bernard Matheri Thuo, known as Rasta, had learned from Muhindi and would go on to become some of Kenya’s most wanted criminals. From violent robberies and carjackings to the killings of police officers and a senior Kenya Army officer, the trio unleashed a wave of violence that pushed the authorities to create a specialized unit known as Alpha Romeo. But hunting these criminals came with its own dangers. Corrupt police informants were leaking information, undercover officers were exposed, and the men behind the investigation were forced into a deadly battle that would last for years. This is the story of the three criminals who took over Nairobi after Muhindi — and the police operation that eventually brought their reign to an end. Welcome.
