Description
Welcome to Walk China - Driving Channel! Would you take the wheel on this narrow border road? This journey starts in Deji Village, Gedang Township, Mêdog County, Nyingchi, Tibet, and follows China’s National Highway G219 to its junction with G559, the Mêdog Highway. Closely spaced bends, limited road width and changing driving conditions keep your attention on the road as we travel through Mêdog’s forested mountains.
Mêdog lies on the southern slopes of the eastern Himalayas. Warm, moisture-laden air from the Indian Ocean reaches the mountains through the valleys, helping sustain the region’s dense forests. The Gedang–Damu area has a mild, humid mountain climate and subtropical evergreen and semi-evergreen broadleaf woodland. Deeply cut valleys and steep slopes give these comparatively low-elevation roads their demanding setting.
The Jinzhu River basin provides an important geographical context for this corridor. The river belongs to the lower Yarlung Tsangpo tributary system, and its catchment includes Deji Village and the Gedang–Damu area. These forested tributary valleys form part of the wider landscape associated with the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon.
Deji Village is involved in tea cultivation, offering a glimpse into the livelihoods of this green corner of Tibet. Nearby Damu Lhoba Ethnic Township has a distinctive cultural heritage, including bamboo and rattan weaving, traditional clothing and displays of local customs. This road connects communities, daily journeys and the transport of goods.
Mêdog was China’s last county without a formally opened road connection. Supplies once relied heavily on porters and pack animals crossing the mountains. The opening of the Zhamo Highway, followed by local improvements and widening on G219, gradually strengthened access and connections between Gedang and Damu. This video follows the G219 section and finishes at the G559 junction.
Nearby on the Mêdog Highway corridor, Linduo Bend is a viewpoint overlooking the Yarlung Tsangpo. Along with forests, tea-growing landscapes and local villages, it forms part of Mêdog’s wider travel setting. Our recorded drive ends where the two national highways meet.
Drone filming wasn’t possible for this shoot in the border region. The view from the car cannot fully convey how the road sits against the steep slopes and valleys. Its width, bends and changing conditions unfold through the actual drive, bringing you close to the road-level experience of this forested landscape.
High-quality 4K footage, with no narration or music and authentic driving sounds, keeps the road and its surroundings at the heart of the experience.
