The one system that saved James Cameron 7 miles down

🌊 Two and a half hours down, his thrusters were dead and his submarine was spinning in a circle on the floor of the ocean. The only way back up was one system James Cameron had never been able to fully test.
In 2012, James Cameron became the first person ever to reach the bottom of the Mariana Trench alone, nearly 11 km down (about 35,787 feet), deeper than Mount Everest is tall. This is the story of everything that went wrong at the bottom, and the almost absurdly simple piece of engineering that carried him home.
