Description

Can a Tiny OS Save This 2011 Mini Laptop? This Samsung NC108 was released in 2011, with an old Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, and hardware that can barely keep up with Windows 7 anymore. So I replaced Windows with Tiny Core Linux — an incredibly lightweight Linux distro with a graphical desktop that's only around 23MB. And the difference is pretty crazy. Tiny Core Linux boots fast, feels surprisingly smooth, and uses barely any resources. But a 23MB OS obviously comes with some compromises. Almost everything you need has to be added yourself. I installed Firefox and tested modern websites, added LibreOffice, installed a proper file manager, tried GIMP, and kept pushing this tiny system to see how usable it could actually become. And that's where Tiny Core Linux gets really interesting. Its biggest strength is also its biggest weakness: Tiny Core Linux gives you almost nothing, but lets you build exactly what you need. For an old computer like this, Tiny Core Linux can be surprisingly capable — and it's also a fascinating way to learn how Linux works under the hood. So, is Tiny Core Linux actually worth using on an old PC? And can Tiny Core Linux really save this 2011 mini laptop? Let's find out.
