Description

March 29th, 1972. RCA Studio C, Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood. Five weeks earlier, backstage in Las Vegas between shows, Priscilla had told Elvis she was leaving. He walked out and did the second show anyway. Now he was in the studio trying to record a new ballad called Always on My Mind — and for two hours, take after take, he couldn't get through it. That's when Johnny Carson walked in the back door of the control room. Carson was in Los Angeles getting ready to move The Tonight Show to Burbank. He'd come to watch a legend work for half an hour. Instead he found a heavy, silent room, and did the only thing he knew how to do: he made a joke. He pointed at an old black grand piano in the corner. "I hear you're a guitar man. I'd like to see if the rumors are true." Everybody laughed. Then Elvis sat down, propped the lid open, closed his eyes — and the entire studio went silent. What he played, what he said afterward, and the single reel of tape that was never released and never heard by the public, is a side of Elvis Presley almost nobody ever got to see.
