Description

When Leonard Bernstein died in 1990, the people sorting through his enormous archive found something nobody could explain: a small card from a Paris hotel, dated June 1959, with two lines of an old French love song written out phonetically by someone who clearly didn't speak French. And on the back, in Bernstein's own hand, five words. New York, June 1972. Elvis Presley played Madison Square Garden for the first time in his career, and closed every show the way he always did — with Can't Help Falling in Love, fast, drums underneath, walking off before the last chord. Leonard Bernstein recognized the melody in two notes: Plaisir d'Amour, written in 1784. His verdict reached Elvis's hotel suite by noon the next day: "He uses a love song as an exit sign." What Bernstein didn't know was why. A Paris café at two in the morning. An old woman at a piano. A twenty-four-year-old soldier whose mother had been gone ten months. And a card he had carried in his wallet for thirteen years. The dare: sing it in French, the whole song, at the tempo it was written in, no band, no microphone — and stay on the stage until it's finished.
