Description

The Yellow Brick Road is a real phenomenon filmed by the E/V Nautilus, but what is it? #yellowbrickroad #oceandiscovery #oceanmystery ⚠️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qC9wn-d1WNo&list=PL0H5lrcTOMY8vioCclT9lxRyDsxDxE7rQ 🌊 In 2022 a deep-sea camera crossed something on the floor of the Pacific that stopped the scientists cold: a straight-edged, brick-by-brick path they nicknamed the "yellow brick road." It looks paved. It looks built. But no one built it. Nearly a kilometre down on the summit of an underwater volcano called Nootka, on the Liliuokalani Ridge inside the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, the E/V Nautilus filmed a stretch of seafloor cracked into near-perfect squares. This is the full story: what the "road" actually is, why ancient underwater eruptions split rock into right angles, how a chain of 75-million-year-old drowned volcanoes ended up here, and the still-unsolved argument over how the ridge even formed. And the part that stays with you: after 67 years of exploring, humans have seen less than a thousandth of one percent of the deep seafloor. This turned up on one of the few glimpses we've had.
