Description
My mother fed a family of five on a grocery list the size of a playing card, written in pencil on the back of an old envelope. And she never once went over. Here’s how.
At 52, I was spending $168 a week on groceries for just two people. So I went back to my mother’s old grocery list rules, all 12 of them, and I’m counting them down for you here. Within two months I was down to $60 a week, every week, and that adds up to over $5,000 a year. From the cash envelope and leftover night to the one word she wrote at the bottom of every grocery list, these are the simple habits that got me back to the way I was raised.
⏱️ TIMESTAMPS:
00:00 — Why $168 a week wasn’t working
1:58 — #12: Write the list before you leave
5:04 — #9: Let the sale flyer plan the menu
6:21 — #8: Cash only, in an envelope
7:23 — #7: One trip a week, no more
8:32 — #6: The $6 melon vs. the $3 melon
11:26 — #3: Leftovers get their own night
12:23 — #2: Make one pound of meat stretch
13:22 — #1: The one word on every list
Which one of my mother’s rules are you going to try first? The cash envelope? The leftover night? Writing “Enough” at the bottom of your list? Tell me in the comments. I read every single one, I promise.
