Description
My mother’s Halloween rules cost nothing in 1979. At 52, I went back to every one. Here’s how.
Last October, I stood in a party store holding a $49 costume my grandson would wear once, and I realized Halloween had turned into a $200 holiday. So I pulled out the old recipe card with my mother’s Halloween rules on it and counted down 12 of them: costumes from the rag bag, a pillowcase instead of a bucket, one pumpkin used three ways, homemade popcorn balls, and more. My whole Halloween cost $19. And rule #1 isn’t about money at all.
If you grew up with bedsheet ghosts and sticky popcorn balls, my mother’s Halloween rules will feel like coming home. Simple, cheap, and my grandkids loved every one.
⏱️ TIMESTAMPS:
00:00 — A pillowcase, a bedsheet, a flashlight
01:51 — #12: The costume comes from the house
02:51 — #11: A pillowcase, not a bucket
03:46 — #10: One pumpkin, used three ways
04:43 — #9: Decorations from the kitchen drawer
09:34 — #4: The candy jar that lasted five weeks
10:26 — #3: The party happens at home
11:22 — #2: Count your money before your candy
12:21 — #1: The rule that made me cry
Which one of my mother’s rules are you going to try this year? The pillowcase? The candy jar? Or knocking on a lonely neighbor’s door?
