Description
In today’s episode of Southern Girl Crime Stories, we cover 1 unsolved and 1 solved true crime case from Missouri and New York. From Carol Blades, a young woman who vanished from a small-town laundromat in 1969 before her remains were found on Christmas Day one year later, to Mary Theresa Simpson, a 12-year-old girl whose killer was finally identified after nearly 62 years… these cases are heartbreaking, disturbing, and unforgettable.
🔎 Featured Cases:
🕵 Carol Blades — Nixa, Missouri
On December 15, 1969, 20-year-old Carol Blades dropped off laundry at a small laundromat in Nixa, Missouri, and was never seen alive again. Later that evening, her car was found abandoned on the shoulder of U.S. Highway 160 north of town with the engine blown, a muddy windshield, a bent antenna, and oil leaking beneath it.
Witnesses reported seeing a man get out of Carol’s car and run across a field toward the laundromat, even pulling his coat over his head to hide his face. But despite that sighting, a police sketch, and a local suspect Carol’s family believed matched the sketch, the investigation was badly mishandled from the start.
For more than a year, Carol’s family searched for answers. Then, on Christmas Day 1970, her skeletal remains were found in a grove of cedar trees on a remote farm near Ponce de Leon, about 12 miles from where she vanished. More than 56 years later, Carol’s murder remains unsolved.
🕵 Mary Theresa Simpson — Elmira, New York
On March 15, 1964, 12-year-old Mary Theresa Simpson left her cousin’s home in Elmira, New York, and started walking home. She was last seen near the corner of East Market and Harriet Streets, but she never made it back.
Four days later, her body was found in a wooded area off Combs Hill Road in Southport. Mary had been sexually assaulted and strangled, and her killer disappeared without a name.
For decades, the case remained cold. Investigators questioned hundreds of people, rewards were offered, and DNA was tested more than once,
