Description

There's a small velvet-lined box in storage at Graceland that holds a single tortoiseshell guitar pick, worn almost through on one edge. The card beside it says only: "Gift. B.B." Almost nobody has ever asked what it means. Memphis, December 1973. Two months after his divorce became final, Elvis Presley was back home recording at Stax. B.B. King was in town too. And when a young engineer asked the King of the Blues what he thought of the King of Rock and Roll, he answered honestly: "That boy took Beale Street uptown twenty years ago. Made a fortune with it. And he never once walked back down to pay the tab." What B.B. didn't know was that in a shoebox at the back of a closet at Graceland, Elvis still kept a cracked 78 of Three O'Clock Blues — bought with lawn-mowing money the week he turned seventeen, and taped back together. The invitation: a narrow juke joint on Beale Street. No stage, no microphone, no band. One borrowed guitar named Lucille. And eighty people who had heard the real thing every Saturday night of their lives — and didn't care one bit who he was.
