Description

What lies at the end of a mountain road leading toward Tibet’s glacier villages? This high-quality 4K drive takes us from Bendui Village into the forested valleys of Zayu, toward Azha Village and a pasture track with no road beyond it. Bendui belongs to Shangzayü Town in Zayu County, Nyingchi, southeastern Tibet. Its setting beside the Gongrigabu River, with Bendui Bridge as a local landmark, introduces a landscape of valley settlements, farmland and forested slopes beneath much higher mountains. Moisture arriving from the Indian Ocean through the region’s valleys helps explain this unusually green side of Tibet. The journey is about the countryside between the villages as much as the destination. The Azha River valley and the surrounding Muzong and Cuixing area connect forests, rural livelihoods and local roads. Each bend changes the perspective on the mountain landscape. Public construction records document a road improvement project between Bendui and Azha, adding another layer to the journey: these roads support everyday village access and transport as well as scenic exploration. Azha is also known for its traditional wooden bowls. This Tibetan craft, recognized as regional intangible cultural heritage, has been handed down through generations. Earlier craftspeople carried their bowls across the mountains to sell in other settlements. The tradition gives the glacier village a human story, linking forest materials, household life and local livelihoods. Nearby Azha Glacier is a maritime glacier shaped by a moist climate, celebrated for the meeting of ice and forest and sometimes called the “Green Sea Glacier.” Its meltwater helps sustain the landscape around the village. Since September, however, the glacier access road had been closed to vehicle entry. We did not drive into Azha Glacier on this trip. The drive ends at the end of a pasture track in Azha Village, where there is no continuing road. 🧭 Route Information 📍 Location: Shangzayü Town, Zayu County, Nyingchi, Tibet, China 🚩 Start: Bendui Village 🏁 End: Dead-end pasture track in Azha Village 🛣️ Road: Local rural mountain road, ending on a pasture track 📏 Driving distance: 25.9 km ⏱️ Driving time: 47 minutes 🏔️ Elevation range: 2,057–2,640 m 📅 Filming date: October 7 🌦️ Weather: Overcast with occasional light rain 🎬 Picture and sound: High-quality 4K footage with real vehicle and environmental sounds No talking, no music — just the actual sounds of the drive.
