Description

Forget Windows & Linux… This OS Is Perfect for Old PCs! What happens when you install a completely different operating system on a 16-year-old PC with only a Core 2 Duo and 2GB of RAM? In this video, I tested Haiku, a lightweight open-source operating system inspired by BeOS, to find out whether it could actually give an old computer a second life. For this experiment, I used a Dell OptiPlex 780 from 2010 with an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, 2GB of RAM, and an old 160GB mechanical hard drive. Despite this extremely limited hardware, Haiku surprised me with incredibly low resource usage, fast response times, and a retro interface that feels like something straight out of the late 1990s. After installing Haiku onto the HDD, I tested its boot and shutdown speeds, explored unique features like window stacking and Replicants, and checked out the built-in applications. Installation itself took less than 30 seconds, while the system remained impressively responsive even on this old hardware. Of course, I also wanted to see what Haiku could actually do in everyday use. I tested WebPositive, installed Firefox through HaikuDepot, browsed modern websites, played YouTube videos, wrote documents in LibreOffice, and even experimented with video editing in OpenShot. I also tried basic C++ programming on Haiku, creating and compiling a small native application with an interactive face that changes expression when clicked. It certainly has limitations, especially when it comes to modern web browsing, but Haiku offers something genuinely different from Windows and Linux. If you have an ancient PC collecting dust, Haiku might be one of the most interesting operating systems you can try on it.
