Description

Is the Shroud of Turin really the burial cloth of Jesus Christ, or one of the most extraordinary medieval artifacts ever created? For more than a century, scientists, historians, skeptics, and believers have tried to answer that question. The Shroud of Turin is a roughly 14-foot-long linen cloth bearing the faint front and back image of a crucified man. The wounds visible on the cloth appear remarkably consistent with the Gospel accounts of the Passion of Jesus, including scourging, injuries around the head, crucifixion wounds, and a wound in the side. But resemblance alone cannot tell us whose image this is. In this episode of The Crown & Palm Chronicles, we investigate the history, science, controversy, and enduring mystery of the Shroud of Turin. The story takes us from Secondo Pia's astonishing 1898 photograph to the medieval village of Lirey, the 1978 STURP investigation, the famous 1988 radiocarbon dating tests, disputed theories about an invisible repair, and scientific research published as recently as 2026. And the evidence is far more complicated than either side of the debate sometimes admits. ▶ IN THIS EPISODE: • What exactly is the Shroud of Turin? • What does the mysterious image actually show? • Secondo Pia's famous 1898 photograph • The Shroud's first securely documented appearance in medieval France • The medieval accusations that the Shroud was a forgery • What STURP scientists discovered in 1978 • Why the image does not appear to be a conventional painting • Evidence associated with blood on the Shroud • The 1988 radiocarbon dating that placed the cloth between 1260 and 1390 • Why some researchers challenged the carbon dating • The controversial "invisible repair" theory • What new 2026 research found in surviving material from the radiocarbon sample • DNA and biological material discovered on Shroud fibers • Near Eastern genetic signatures — and what they do and do NOT prove • Why scientists still debate how the image itself was formed • What the Catholic Church actually teaches about the Shroud • Pope Saint John Paul II's remarkable description of the Shroud as a "challenge to our intelligence" Researchers still debate exactly how the extraordinarily superficial image was produced, and no single image-formation explanation has achieved universal scientific acceptance. New research continues to add evidence to a debate many people thought had been settled decades ago. Perhaps most surprisingly, the Catholic Church does not require Catholics to believe that the Shroud of Turin is authentic. When Pope Saint John Paul II visited the Shroud in 1998, he emphasized that its authenticity is not a matter of faith. It is a question for historical and scientific investigation. So where does the evidence leave us? Medieval artifact? Ancient relic? The actual burial cloth of Jesus Christ? Or still not enough evidence to know?
