Description

More than 2,000 years ago, ancient builders constructed a massive stone barrage across the flowing Kaveri River in Tamil Nadu. Known as Kallanai (or the Grand Anicut) and traditionally attributed to the early Chola king Karikala, it was designed with a brilliant concept: instead of attempting to block the river outright, it diverted excess floodwaters into canals to irrigate the fertile delta. While specific early construction records are scarce, Kallanai remains one of the oldest operating water-diversion structures in the world and a testament to ancient Indian hydraulic engineering.
