RESIDENT EVIL Finally Got the Movie It Deserved.

Resident Evil fans finally have a movie this franchise deserves! In this spoiler-free review, I’m talking about 2026’s Resident Evil, the brand-new big-screen adaptation of Capcom’s legendary survival-horror franchise, directed by Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian and Weapons. After decades of Resident Evil movies ranging from the Mila Jovovich films to the more faithful but disappointing Welcome to Raccoon City, expectations for another reboot were understandably complicated. But instead of simply recreating one of the games scene-for-scene, Cregger seems to understand what makes Resident Evil work in the first place: isolation, survival horror, grotesque creatures, ridiculous B-movie energy, limited resources and the constant feeling that something horrible is waiting around the next corner. I talk about the film’s horror and gore, the lead performance from Austin Abrams, its balance of comedy and tension, and why this feels like the strongest attempts yet to translate the experience of playing Resident Evil into a movie. It’s not perfect, but after 30 years of Resident Evil, this feels like a pretty great way to celebrate the franchise. No major spoilers in this review.
