Description
Hurricane Isaias just killed four people, dropped the roof of a gas station onto the cars parked under it on Blue Angels Parkway in Pensacola, tore the roofs off an inn, a convenience store and an apartment block in Santa Rosa County with a mother and her 13-year-old daughter under a mattress inside, ripped the boardwalk off the beach at Destin, drove a 117-mph gust across the Gulf Breeze peninsula, shoved the Shoal River two and a half feet past its own forecast into major flood, and turned the lights off for more than 929,000 homes and businesses in three states. All in one night and one morning. And the storm that did it was dead over Alabama by sunrise. At dawn the count was zero. By noon it was four: a woman pinned under a tree on her home in north Pensacola, a man found dead in his garage with the generator running, a tree through a house in Birmingham at 5 AM, and a fourth in Barbour County, Alabama. More than 700,000 are still without power this afternoon, the Shoal River is standing at 22 feet, and nobody has published what the eye did to Okaloosa Island.
IN THIS VIDEO • Pensacola, Milton, Gulf Breeze, Destin, Fort Walton Beach, Monroeville, Birmingham: the damage, town by town • The four: who, where, when, and what the sheriff said about the generator • The clock: Category 3 at breakfast, "TAKE COVER NOW" at 5:45, the tree in Pensacola at 6:45, landfall at Destin at 8:30, the tree in Birmingham at 5 AM • The wind: 117, 116, 114, 110, 105, 102, and why the hardest gusts and the first death were 40 miles west of the eye • The water: 5.6 feet at Panama City Beach, Mobile Bay blown 3.2 feet below normal, and the beach with no gauge • The river: the Shoal forecast at 19.85, crested at 22.49, "nearly all residences on Plantation Lane are flooded" • The lights: 834,000 at 4 AM, 929,000 at 7:29 AM after the storm, 700,000 at 1:21 PM, and why Florida's count has barely moved • Sally and Ivan: what this coast has taken before, and the two years to the day • What is confirmed and what is still being counted, as of Saturday afternoon
