Description
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake just overturned a hotel in Tonosí with four people inside, dropped the bell tower of a 16th-century cathedral while the bishop was holding a meeting under it, tore one side off a governor's building in Penonomé, damaged 188 schools and 20 hospitals and clinics across nine provinces, and put a tsunami warning on Panama's Pacific coast for waves up to 3 meters. It did it at 12:56 on a Friday afternoon, from a fault that broke on dry land, 8 miles down, and slipped as much as 25 feet. The first number the tsunami center put on it was 8.0. Forty hours later the official death toll is zero. The USGS casualty model is RED: about 100 dead, $5.8 billion. The town at the center of the shaking is cut off. And USGS gives a 12% chance of another magnitude 7 this week.
IN THIS VIDEO • Penonomé: the cathedral tower, the governor's building, the hospital evacuated twice • Tonosí: intensity 9, the Hotel Kiki on its side, four rescued, "by land you cannot get there" • Panama City: windows "billowing", a rooftop pool spilling 20 stories up, the metro and Tocumen shut • The timeline: 12:56 PM, the tsunami warning at 1:02, 300 people on high ground, the M6.6 at 3:25 PM, the M6.0 at 11:14 PM • The fault: strike-slip, "similar to the San Andreas", up to 7.8 m of slip, 0.82 g, 647,000 people at intensity VII or worse • The canal: 200 km away, "operating normally", the inspections, the Pedro Miguel fault and the 0.5 g design • Sinaproc's Saturday count: 400+ structures, 142 homes, 188 schools, 20 health facilities, 13 churches, 9 bridges, 27 injured, zero dead • USGS's RED alert and aftershock forecast: 67% for an M6+, 12% for an M7+ this week, 32% within a year • 1882, 1934, 1991, and the fourth M7+ in Latin America this year • What is confirmed and what is still being counted, as of Saturday morning

This is a developing situation. Figures are as of Saturday morning, October 10, 2026. As of that hour Panama's civil protection agency reported no deaths and 27 minor injuries; the USGS casualty estimate is a statistical model, not a count. The Panama Canal reported normal operations with inspections under way. Magnitude, damage and aftershock figures will be revised.
