Description

The pool at Biscuit Basin went off three times in five days. On September 23, Black Diamond Pool, the one that showered a boardwalk full of tourists with boulders in 2024, threw water and mud tens of feet into the air. On September 24 the new pool beside it, which did not exist in May, began erupting. And on the night of September 27, just after 8:12 PM, that new pool blew itself apart and threw boiling water, steam, mud and rock at least 100 feet into the sky. This time the instruments were watching: the U.S. Geological Survey says the explosion was "very well recorded by seismic, acoustic, and camera monitoring stations." And the same week, a 1926 ranger's letter revealed an explosion at the same basin in 1925 that nobody saw. Four explosions on record. Three in 26 months. Has it exploded again since? Here is the straight answer, and why it is not the comforting one. IN THIS VIDEO • Has Yellowstone exploded again since September 27? The honest answer, first • The footage: what the USGS cameras, seismometer and sound sensor caught at 8:12 PM • Three events in five days: Sept 23, Sept 24, Sept 27, in the observatory's own words • A pool born in June, erupting in September, exploding in September • The 1925 explosion found in a 1926 letter: four blasts at one basin • The network that can now hear an explosion and point at it, and the "thumping" at Doublet Pool • Porkchop 1989: eight witnesses, six-foot blocks, rocks thrown 200 feet • Norris 2003: the last time a basin had to close for its own ground • Mary Bay, Turbid Lake, Elliott's Crater: how big these get • Giant Geyser's new phase, 77 earthquakes, a decade of sinking that stopped • What "green" means, and what the roads closing on October 31 means SOURCES USGS Yellowstone Volcano Observatory monthly update (Oct 1, 2026) and monthly video update (Mike Poland, Oct 1, 2026) · USGS Caldera Chronicles: "Yellowstone's newest hydrothermal monitoring station and 'renewed' camera" (Sept 28, 2026), "The misplaced pearl" (Kondracki & Harrison, Oct 5, 2026), "A new camera now observing activity at Biscuit Basin" (Aug 3, 2026), "Oops, it did it again" (June 22, 2026) · USGS hydrothermal explosions page · USGS earthquake catalog (Sept 27–Oct 8, 2026) · USGS Porkchop Geyser column and Fournier et al. (1991) · National Park Service: Porkchop Geyser, Norris disturbances, park roads (Oct 8, 2026), visitation (Sept 15 and Oct 6, 2026), Superintendent Sholly announcement (Sept 11, 2026) · KSL (Aug 19, 2024) on Mary Bay, Turbid Lake and Elliott's Crater · Buckrail (Oct 6, 2026) · Congressional Research Service IF13025 (Feb 2026) Yellowstone's volcano alert level is NORMAL and its aviation color code is GREEN. The U.S. Geological Survey reports no sign of an approaching volcanic eruption. Hydrothermal explosions are a separate hazard and can occur without warning. As of October 8, 2026, no hydrothermal explosion has been reported in Yellowstone since September 27. Biscuit Basin has been closed to visitors since July 2024. #Yellowstone #YellowstoneVolcano #BiscuitBasin #HydrothermalExplosion #USGS #Supervolcano #NorrisGeyserBasin #Wyoming #NationalParks #CrisisRadar
