A tornado just flipped an 18-wheeler and lifted cars off the pavement and dropped them across the Walmart and Sam's Club parking lots on Skibo Road in Fayetteville, tore part of the roof off the Marriott next door, caved a ceiling into a living room in northeast Raleigh seconds after the man who lives there ran out of it, destroyed a building in Candor, and shut the runways at Raleigh-Durham: five confirmed tornadoes in under two hours across the middle of North Carolina on a Sunday afternoon, with 16 tornado warnings in five and a half hours. And the storm that did it had been a hurricane on the Florida Panhandle on Friday night and had been dead for a day and a half. While the middle of the state was being torn apart in daylight, the mountains Helene destroyed two years ago spent the night under flood sirens: Chimney Rock's main street under water, the Lake Lure dam releasing, seven inches of rain, landslides on two highways, and a warning at 5:11 AM that read "Seek higher ground now." Nobody in North Carolina is confirmed dead or hurt. No tornado has a rating yet. The survey teams went out Monday morning.
