Description

The Pacific just tore through the timber seawall on the Long Beach Peninsula, ran down 63rd Place and into the houses, threw waves onto the roofs along Seaside Walk, ate the ground out from under a two-story house in the 6500 block until it was sinking below the boardwalk with its deck crumbling into the surf, red-tagged eight buildings and thirteen homes, ordered two blocks evacuated, and then came back the next morning and collapsed the boardwalk further between 64th and 65th while a crane was still dropping 3,000-pound sandbags onto what was left. Three mornings in a row. And the storm that did it never touched California. It went post-tropical at sea and died over the Arizona desert on Sunday morning without a single warning ever being issued for the American coast. It was the third storm in six weeks: "The collapse began when Marie came. Then Hurricane Polo, now Rachel." The mayor: "unprecedented for our community." The ocean is still a foot and a half above the tide tables at every gauge from Santa Barbara to San Diego on Monday morning, the evacuation order runs through noon Tuesday, and the sand that is supposed to save the Peninsula does not arrive until the week of October 19. IN THIS VIDEO • Seaside Walk, 63rd Place, the 6500 block, 64th to 66th: the images from three mornings • The clock: Friday's 9 AM tide, Saturday's 8 feet at San Diego, Saturday night's two-foot anomaly, Rachel post-tropical at sea, dead by Sunday 8 AM, Sunday's tide five inches short • The gauges, observed against predicted, from Santa Barbara to San Diego, and Monday's +1.5 • The detail: undermined since September 8, the seven-point plan, 45,000 cubic yards started Saturday, the $11.4M dredge on October 19, the $3.6M wall • Newport behind its berm, Laguna, Seal Beach, Palomar's 5 inches, Blythe's wettest storm since 1965 • The ledger: Marie, Polo, the Kelvin wave, "record warm" water, 1939 • What held on Sunday, and what is still standing on the beach with the tide at 10:13 Monday morning SOURCES City of Long Beach (evacuation notices, tags) via LAist / Long Beach Post, Los Angeles Times, NBC Los Angeles, CBS Los Angeles, MyNewsLA · KTLA 5 (SKY5, Friday Oct 9) · NOAA CO-OPS stations 9410170 San Diego, 9410660 Los Angeles, 9410230 La Jolla, 9410840 Santa Monica, 9411340 Santa Barbara (observed and predicted water levels, Oct 10–12, preliminary) · NOAA National Hurricane Center, Rachel Advisories 54–58 and Discussion 56 · NWS Los Angeles and NWS San Diego Coastal Flood Advisories (Oct 12) · San Francisco Chronicle (Oct 11) · ABC7 Los Angeles (Newport closures; Supervisor Foley) · Patch / Scripps Institution of Oceanography (Kelvin wave) · LA Times via Spokesman-Review (Daniel Swain; Joe Angelo) This is a developing situation. Figures are as of Monday morning, October 12, 2026, before the 10:13 AM high tide. Tide heights are preliminary NOAA data; "about eight feet" and "five inches short" are derived from observed and predicted readings. No injuries or deaths were reported. The house in the 6500 block had not been reported as collapsed. #LongBeach #SeasideWalk #TropicalStormRachel #NewportBeach #BalboaPeninsula #HighSurf #KingTide #SouthernCalifornia #CoastalFlooding #ElNino #CrisisRadar
