Description
In 1966, banjo player and radio disc jockey John Hartford was living in a rented trailer in Nashville when he and his wife went to a local theater to see David Lean's film Doctor Zhivago. Inspired by the movie's sweeping romance between Yuri Zhivago and Lara, Hartford returned to the trailer and wrote Gentle on My Mind in less than thirty minutes as a chorus-free 'word movie.' After Glen Campbell's 1967 version turned it into a crossover standard, BMI certified the song with over six million U.S. broadcast plays, making it the second-most-played song in twentieth-century radio history.
Source: Documented by BMI broadcast archives, The Tennessean's interviews with John Hartford, and the Country Music Hall of Fame manuscript collection.
