Description

The overwhelming reaction to their 1976 television performance prompted Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris to plan a full collaborative album in early 1977. However, the project was derailed by complicated contractual gridlock among their respective record companies: RCA (Parton), Asylum (Ronstadt), and Warner Bros. (Harris). Conflicting tour obligations and disputes over publishing royalties froze the sessions for nearly a decade. When the three artists finally reconvened in late 1986 to record Trio, the album sold over four million copies, won two Grammy Awards, and cemented their partnership as one of roots music's crowning achievements. Source: Recounted in Linda Ronstadt's memoir Simple Dreams (2013) and contemporary Billboard industry reporting on the Trio sessions (1987).
