Description

Closing out the Rumours tracklist, Gold Dust Woman remains one of the darkest recordings in rock music. Producer Ken Caillat sought an exhausted, fractured vocal take from Stevie Nicks, prompting sessions that stretched into the early morning hours. To generate unsettling sonic texture, drummer Mick Fleetwood brought panes of glass and metal sheeting into the studio, breaking them with a hammer over a microphone wrapped in protective towels. Nicks performed her vocals draped in black chiffon, weeping and wailing into the microphone to convey the haunting desperation of addiction. Source: Detailed in Ken Caillat's Making Rumours and confirmed by Nicks in her 1998 VH1 Behind the Music profile.
