Description
Heart of Gold became the only Billboard Hot 100 number-one single of Neil Young's entire career in March 1972, but the triumph bothered two legends at once. In a 1985 interview with Spin magazine, Bob Dylan confessed that while living in Phoenix in 1972 he hated hearing the song on the radio because the harmonica and vocal phrasing sounded so much like his own work that he felt it should have been him. Meanwhile, Young felt trapped by soft-rock commercial expectations and deliberately sabotaged his mainstream appeal with the raw, abrasive albums later known as the Ditch Trilogy.
