Description

These cars are driving right over a road crew. That's how the crew stays safe. Fixing a highway means closing a lane. Cars squeeze past, a few feet from the workers, and traffic backs up for miles. So Switzerland built a bridge that drives. It's longer than two football fields, on 256 wheels. Cars ramp up and cross the top at almost forty miles an hour. Underneath, the crew paves with no cars beside them. Each night, the whole bridge rolls a football field forward to the next stretch. The ASTRA Bridge was built by Switzerland's Federal Roads Office. It is 257 m long and rolls on 256 wheels. Two lanes of traffic cross its deck at 60 km/h while the crew repairs the road in the covered work area underneath, away from the cars. At night it moves about 100 m forward to the next section. This is an animation: the machines, traffic and highway are illustrations, not footage of the real bridge. #Shorts #Engineering #RoadWork
