Why Pickleball Has a No Smash Zone

This smash just lost the point. Stand right at the net, and you can smash every ball before it drops. The tallest player would always win. So there's a seven-foot zone by the net, called the kitchen. Step in it, and you can't hit the ball out of the air. You have to let it bounce. The bounce kills its speed, and the smash turns into a soft little dink.
