Description
Diesel trains are railway vehicles powered by diesel engines, either directly through mechanical or hydraulic transmission or indirectly by generating electricity for traction motors. They include self-propelled diesel multiple units and locomotive-hauled trains.
Experimental diesel rail vehicles appeared in the early twentieth century, but large-scale adoption began from the 1930s and accelerated after the Second World War. Diesel traction gradually replaced steam locomotives because diesel engines could be started quickly, required fewer crew, consumed less fuel, and needed far less cleaning and maintenance. Diesel-electric locomotives also provided strong low-speed pulling power, making them especially effective for freight services.
A major advantage of diesel trains is that they can operate without overhead wires or electrified rails, allowing railways to serve rural, remote, and lightly used routes without the high cost of installing electrical infrastructure. They are generally more flexible and cheaper to introduce than electric trains, while offering greater efficiency, reliability, and range than steam traction.
