Description

A transistor is a semiconductor used to switch and amplify electrical signals. Since Bell Laboratories invented it in 1947, it has replaced the vacuum tube in most applications and become the basic element of most modern electronics. Early transistors were individual parts used in telephone, radios and military equipment. Improvements in silicon processing and related manufacturing processes however, allowed large numbers of transistors to be created in combination as parts of a single integrated circuit. Core transistor types include field-effect transistors and junction transistors, especially MOSFETs. MOSFETs were especially suitable for use in miniaturisation, allowing processors, memory chips and specialised integrated circuits to be created containing billions of microscopic switching elements. Designing the layout of such devices depends heavily on electronic design circuit simulation, semiconductor foundries, automation software, ASIC workflows and intensive testing with instruments such as parameter analysers, oscilloscopes, as well as RF/network analysers. Transistors come in larger sizes for use in power and radio too. IGBTs, power MOSFETs, silicon-carbide and gallium-nitride devices are heavily used in electric vehicles, solar inverters, compact power supplies and industrial control systems. RF transistors feature in radar, wireless communications and satellite equipment. A wider engineering industry of PCB design, rapid prototyping, contract electronics assembly, semiconductor packaging and failure-analysis services has grown up based on transistor technology, making the transistor the foundation of the modern electronic industry.
