Description
A recreational vehicle, commonly known as an RV for short is a motor vehicle designed for habitation and travel. The first RVs emerged in the early 20th century as soon as cars and other motor vehicles became viable for long-distance journeys for leisure. Specially built camping trailers and motorized caravans became increasingly popular in the 1920s and 1930s, especially in the wake of massive highway expansion. The company Winnebago became almost synonymous with the US motorhome boom of the 1960s and 1970s.
Today, RVs range from small campervans to substantial motorhome containing kitchens, bathrooms, multiple beds as well as having built in heating and air conditioning. Modern RVs can carry water, batteries, solar panels, propane and electric generators allowing days of off-grid living. New RVs can be expensive, ranging from vehicles like the Forest River Subseeker to luxury RVS like the Newell Coach p50 have been described as land-yachts in reference to their spacious and luxurious internal spaces. Meanwhile some RVs are built for special purposes like the EarthRoamer SX series which are ruggedized for off-road use.
Travelling by RV is particularly popular in North America where large road networks, vast national parks and numerous campgrounds offer brief holidays and long touring opportunities, while many RV owners opt for boondocking, staying in remote locations, relying on their RVs to provide self-sufficiency during their stay.
