Description
Sailing ships are ocean going vessels designed to move by harnessing the power of the wind through the use of sails set on masts.
They were developed from pre-historical technology likely used on early rafts. The first true sailing ships in the historical record were those from Egypt in the 3rd millennium BCE. Sailing ships reached their golden age between the 16th and 19th centuries following advances in hull and sail design, rigging, keels, masts among other technologies. During that time, they were the backbone of global trade and empire. Sailing ships can be categorized by their rigging type (for example, square-rigged, fore-and-aft rigged, brigantine, or schooner) as well as their size and intended role. By the 20th century they had been largely replaced by first steam, and then diesel, engines.
Today sailing ships remain popular in recreation, both traditionally made, and vessels that leverage novel materials and other technology.
