Description

UFOs, or unidentified flying objects, are aerial objects or phenomena that cannot immediately be identified. Reports range from ordinary misidentifications to cases involving unusual shapes, movements, sensor returns, and alleged interactions with aircraft or the environment. Interest has intensified during periods of official investigation and debate over potential disclosure. PRINCIPAL TYPES FLYING SAUCERS AND DISCS The classic UFO is a metallic lenticular or disc-shaped object, sometimes with a shallow dome, raised central section, or glowing underside. Reported surfaces are usually smooth and silver, with no visible wings, tail, rotors, or exhaust. Discs are reported to hover, wobble, and tilt before accelerating, climbing vertically, or making abrupt turns. They became the defining UFO form and remain closely associated with the 1947 Roswell incident and Bob Lazar’s description of a purported “Sport Model” craft near Area 51. In UFO lore and science fiction, they often function as scout craft and are associated with landings, beams of light, vehicle interference, occupants, abductions, and crash-retrieval stories. ORBS AND LUMINOUS SPHERES Orbs appear as spherical lights ranging from small glowing points to apparently solid objects surrounded by luminous halos. Common colours include white, amber, orange, red, green, and blue. They are often reported drifting slowly, holding position against the wind, pulsing, zigzagging, following aircraft, or accelerating suddenly. Similar objects appear in Second World War accounts of “foo fighters,” the green-fireball sightings over New Mexico, the Hessdalen lights, and numerous modern reports near military and nuclear installations. Some accounts describe orbs splitting, merging, extinguishing instantly, or moving in coordinated groups. They are variously interpreted as probes, plasma-like phenomena, drones, atmospheric effects, or misidentified lights. A smaller number of alleged recovered or deactivated orbs have been described as metallic, sometimes with unusual markings or inscriptions. BLACK TRIANGLES Black triangles are described as large, dark, triangular craft, normally carrying three bright lights at their corners and occasionally a central red or orange light. Their surfaces are often said to be featureless and darker than the surrounding sky. They typically move slowly and silently at low altitude, sometimes appearing large enough to block stars. Reports also describe hovering, gradual banking, and sudden high-speed departure. The Belgian UFO wave of 1989–90 and the 1997 Phoenix Lights are the best-known incidents associated with this form, although both involved multiple observations and competing explanations. In UFO folklore, triangles are frequently associated with military airspace, surveillance, secret aerospace programmes, and large non-human craft. CYLINDERS Cylindrical UFOs are elongated objects resembling rockets, tubes, cigars, or airships. They may have rounded ends, blunt ends, or a smooth, seamless body without wings or stabilising fins. They are usually reported travelling in straight lines, hovering vertically or horizontally, entering clouds, or moving at great altitude. TIC TACS, CAPSULES, EGGS, AND OVALS These objects are smooth, pale, and almost completely featureless. They are commonly compared to pills, capsules, eggs, or elongated lozenges. No cockpit, wings, control surfaces, or visible propulsion are normally reported. Their alleged movement is among the most extreme in modern UFO accounts: rapid acceleration, abrupt stopping, hovering, mirroring aircraft manoeuvres, and moving between air and water without an obvious change in performance. The best-known example is the 2004 USS Nimitz encounter, in which naval aviators reported a white “Tic Tac” object manoeuvring above disturbed ocean water. Earlier oval or egg-shaped reports include the 1964 Socorro incident, where police officer Lonnie Zamora described a pale craft that landed briefly before departing. They are often interpreted as probes, advanced drones, transmedium vehicles, or sensor anomalies. BELLS, ACORNS, AND CONES Bell- or acorn-shaped UFOs resemble compact re-entry capsules, metallic seeds, or blunt conical pods. They are sometimes described as bronze, dark metal, or scorched, with markings around the lower edge. These objects are usually associated with fiery descent, impact, landing, or recovery rather than sustained aerial manoeuvring. The 1965 Kecksburg incident, in which witnesses reported a fireball and an acorn-shaped object in Pennsylvania woodland, became the archetypal case and one of the best-known crash-retrieval legends outside Roswell.
