Tesla Demonstrates Flying Roadster, Plans Production for 2028 Tesla has brought its vision of a flying car closer to reality by demonstrating a redesigned version of its long-awaited Roadster electric sports car. During an event at a SpaceX facility in McGregor, Texas, on October 15, the vehicle drove upside down along a specially designed ramp, performed brief aerial manoeuvres and landed safely. The demonstration came nearly nine years after Tesla first unveiled the next-generation Roadster in 2017. The event showcased technology developed in collaboration with SpaceX, Elon Musk’s aerospace company, highlighting the vehicle’s unusual capabilities. During the demonstration, the Roadster travelled up a large curved ramp, continued along it while inverted and then launched into the air before landing safely. The car also performed a stunt in which it flipped over Tesla’s entire vehicle lineup, passing above the Cybertruck before landing. Tesla claims that the Roadster can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just one second. According to Tesla’s vehicle engineering head, Lars Moravy, the car’s aerial capabilities are powered by SpaceX thrusters. As reported by TechCrunch, Moravy explained that the vehicle uses 10 thrusters connected to a system containing 600 litres of compressed air. The system enables the car to lift off and rotate in midair. He also indicated that carrying more compressed gas could extend the vehicle’s flight time. The Roadster 2 is the successor to Tesla’s original Roadster and has been in development for nearly a decade. Although the company initially promised deliveries by 2020, the vehicle has yet to enter production. Following the latest demonstration, Musk said production is expected to begin in 2028. Tesla is offering the Roadster in three variants: Performance, Thrust and Rocket. According to the company’s website, the Performance version is described as “road ready”, while the Thrust variant is positioned as “race ready”. The top-tier Rocket model is described as “air ready”. Reservations have also opened for the upcoming electric supercar. Customers can reserve the Performance version for $50,000, while the Thrust variant requires a $250,000 reservation. The Rocket edition, meanwhile, is available by invitation only and cannot be reserved through the standard process. Despite the demonstration, the Roadster’s commercial availability remains some time away. If Tesla meets its latest timeline, production could begin in 2028.
