Description

Evolution of ISTANBUL: Fixed-Camera Timelapse 10,000 Years in 10 Minutes Every city has a history. Istanbul has everyone else's history too. This is the only city on earth that has served as the capital of three separate empires - Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman - on the same piece of ground. It has been besieged more times than almost any city in history, burned, rebuilt, renamed and reinvented across twelve thousand years without ever losing its position as the hinge between two worlds. 🎬 IN THIS VIDEO: ⬥ The Bosphorus is tidal shallows and shifting coastline. ⬥ Around 6,200 BC, one of the earliest Neolithic settlements in the region takes root at Yenikapı. ⬥ Greek colonists found Byzantion in 660 BC, recognizing immediately that whoever controls this strait controls trade between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. ⬥ Byzantion passes through Persian, Spartan and Macedonian hands. Philip II of Macedon besieges it in 340 BC and fails. The city proves difficult to take from the very beginning. ⬥ In 193 AD, Septimius Severus destroys most of the city after a three-year siege then immediately rebuilds it, adding the first Hippodrome. Byzantion is too valuable to leave in ruins. ⬥ Constantine the Great arrives in 324 AD and makes a decision that changes world history: he moves the capital of the Roman Empire here, building a new city so vast it takes six years to complete. He calls it Constantinople. The New Rome. ⬥ The Walls of Theodosius go up in 413 AD, fourteen kilometers of triple fortification that will hold for over a thousand years. ⬥ In 532, the Nika Riots burn half the city in a week. Justinian uses the ruins to build the Hagia Sophia completed in just four years, a dome so large that engineers won't understand how it stands for another millennium. ⬥ Constantinople defeats Arab siege fleets in 674 and again in 717. The city becomes the shield of Christian Europe for centuries. ⬥ The Great Schism of 1054 splits Christianity in two - with Constantinople at the center of the fracture. ⬥ In 1204, the Fourth Crusade sacks the city - not the enemy, but supposed allies. The richest city in the Christian world is looted by Christian soldiers. ⬥ On the 29th of May 1453, Mehmed II breaches the Theodosian Walls after 53 days. Constantinople becomes Istanbul. The Byzantine Empire ends after 1,100 years. ⬥ Topkapı Palace rises above the Bosphorus. The Grand Bazaar opens. The Süleymaniye Mosque is completed in 1557 under Suleiman the Magnificent. Istanbul becomes the center of the Islamic world. ⬥ In 1935, Hagia Sophia - church, then mosque, then museum - is secularized and opened to everyone. In 2020, it becomes a mosque again. ⬥ The first Bosphorus Bridge opens in 1973, physically connecting Europe and Asia for the first time in history. Istanbul becomes the only metropolitan city spanning two continents. ⬥ In 1999, an earthquake kills over 17,000 people across the region. Istanbul survives and keeps growing. ⬥ 2026. Fifteen million people live here. The Bosphorus still runs between them. 📍 THE LOCATION: Fixed camera position: The western shore of the Bosphorus Strait, Istanbul, Turkey. Cinematography: A single, unmoving wide-angle camera remains fixed in the exact same location for the entire 12,000 year journey, capturing the transformation of this peninsula from post-glacial coastline to one of the greatest cities in human history. 🔔 Like if history like this deserves to exist.
