Description
An epic Nightcore version of Roei no Uta, the 1937 Japanese song. Hear this historical composition reimagined with new energy.
This video features a Nightcore arrangement of Roei no Uta , a Japanese military song originating from a newspaper song contest in 1937. The lyrics, written by Yabuuchi Kiichirō and set to music by Koseki Yūji, became widely known and were sung by soldiers at the front during the early years of the Sino-Japanese War.
The song depicts the experience of soldiers in the field: a burning landscape, a brief rest during an encampment, uncertainty about surviving the next day, the death of comrades, and a willingness to sacrifice one's life framed in the original lyrics as being "for peace in East Asia."
This arrangement is presented for historical and musical interest only and does not constitute endorsement or glorification of the political or ideological views expressed in the original work.
*English*
Bravely we swore we would come back victorious
And since we left our homeland with that vow
How could I die without a deed to my name?
Each time I hear the bugle sound the advance
Waves of flags rise up behind my eyelids
The earth and the grass and the trees all burn like fire
We push our way across the endless plain
The Rising Sun advances under steel helmets
Stroking the mane of my horse as we go
Who can know whether I will live tomorrow?
Bullets and tanks and bayonets laid aside
A short rest in the bivouac. A pillow of grass
My father came to me in a dream
Come back dead! he said to spur me on
I wake and glare at the enemy sky
I think back on the battle of this day
Stained crimson and yet with a smile
My comrade died laughing
Long live His Majesty the Emperor! he cried
How could I ever forget the voice he left behind?
A soldier's body has long been ready
To be cast away without regret
Do not weep for me. Insects in the grass
If it is for the peace of the East
What is there to regret in one life?
[EN] DISCLAIMER
This is a nightcore cover of a Japanese song from 1937. The lyrics are the
original ones and are not mine. They were written for a newspaper contest in
the summer of 1937 and became the song an entire army was sent off with. They
are presented here as a historical document and as a piece of music, not as a
political statement. This song is the counterpart to my nightcore version of
Sen'yu (1905): where that one mourns a single fallen friend, this one speaks
for the mobilisation of 1937. Both stand here as what they were. No war, army,
government or ideology is endorsed or glorified. No real nation or people is
targeted. This video is made for artistic and educational purposes only.
