Description

An extreme heat warning took effect across coastal and valley Southern California at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026, and runs until 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 8: more than 150 hours, the longest October heat alert the region has had on record. In the first two days, downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach reached 103°F, San Diego reached 105°F and broke a record from 1987, and Vista reached 108°F, tying the hottest temperature in its history. On Saturday afternoon a wildfire near Santa Clarita burned about a thousand acres in under four hours. This video follows the heat wave day by day, and explains why the danger is in the nights, which are setting records of their own, and in the length of the event. It covers the power grid, the fire, and how heat deaths in California are counted.
