Hollywood Barely Makes Movies Like THE WEIGHT Anymore

The Weight is the kind of movie that we get enough of on the big screen these days. It’s a straightforward, mid-budget adult thriller with great actors, great locations, and a simple premise executed with solid craftsmanship. Starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, the story takes place during the Great Depression, where a group of prisoners are given an opportunity to earn their freedom by transporting a massive amount of gold through the wilderness. As you would expect, things don’t exactly go according to plan. In this video, I talk about why The Weight feels like a refreshing throwback to movies like The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Wages of Fear and Sorcerer. How Ethan Hawke delivers the film’s strongest performance, and the way the film’s outdoor sequences are easily its biggest strength. While I enjoyed the film, I also think it leaves a lot of potential on the table, which I explain in the video. The Weight won’t become one of the biggest movies of 2026 and that's to be expected.
