Description
Evolution of LISBON: Fixed-Camera Timelapse 12,000 Years of Rise, Ruin & Rebirth in 11 Minutes
Lisbon has been built and destroyed and rebuilt so many times that most cities would have simply given up. It was a Roman port, a Moorish citadel, the launchpad for the Age of Discovery, the epicenter of one of the deadliest earthquakes in European history and somehow, every time it fell, it came back more beautiful than before.
This is the full story of one square on the riverbank. From the first hunters who camped here after the ice age, to the royal palace that stood here for two centuries, to the earthquake that erased everything in six minutes and the city that rose from the rubble in a completely different form.
Praça do Comércio is not just a square. It is a record of everything that happened here.
🎬 IN THIS VIDEO:
⬥ The Tagus estuary is tidal mud and marshland. No city. No square. Just the ice age ending.
⬥ Mesolithic communities collect shellfish on this riverbank for thousands of years before anyone builds anything permanent.
⬥ Phoenician traders sail into the Tagus around 800 BC - the first time this estuary connects to the wider world.
⬥ Rome arrives in 138 BC and turns the settlement into Olisipo. Stone quays, warehouses, garum factories, roads heading north. The waterfront takes shape for the first time.
⬥ Viking longships attack twice. The same river that made Lisbon wealthy made it permanently exposed.
⬥ On the 25th of October 1147, Afonso Henriques and a crusader fleet take the Moorish city after seventeen weeks of siege. Al-Ushbuna becomes Lisbon, capital of a new kingdom.
⬥ Vasco da Gama sails from the Tagus in 1497. Within a decade, this riverbank is the most important commercial waterfront in the world.
⬥ On the 1st of November 1755, an earthquake, a tsunami and a fire destroy the royal palace, the opera house and most of the city in a single morning.
⬥ Pombal does not rebuild what was lost. He designs something entirely new - the grid, the square, the yellow facades. Everything standing here today is his.
⬥ On the 1st of February 1908, the king and crown prince are assassinated as their carriage crosses this square. The monarchy lasts two more years.
⬥ On the 25th of April 1974, soldiers with carnations in their rifles end 48 years of dictatorship before breakfast.
⬥ 2026. The Tagus still moves the same way it always has.
📍 THE LOCATION:
Fixed camera position: Praça do Comércio (Terreiro do Paço), Lisbon, Portugal — the north bank of the River Tagus.
Cinematography: A single, unmoving wide-angle camera remains fixed in the exact same location for the entire 12,000 year journey, capturing the transformation of this riverbank from post-glacial estuary to one of the most dramatic civic squares in Europe.
