Description

Is Hope one of the most ambitious South Korean blockbusters in years… or a 160-minute monster movie that desperately needed an editor? Directed by Na Hong-jin (The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, The Wailing), Hope is a bizarre and ambitious sci-fi thriller that mixes The Host, Attack on Titan, A Quiet Place, and Mad Max: Fury Road with Na Hong-jin’s unmistakably quircky filmmaking style. The first hour is fantastic—a tense mystery where the monsters are mostly kept hidden, followed by huge action sequences, impressive stunt work, practical production design, and some genuinely spectacular creature attacks. But as Hope gets bigger, it also gets messier. The movie becomes increasingly focused on its mythology, the runtime starts to drag, the CGI becomes inconsistent, and a major story shift takes the film in a direction that may completely divide audiences. In this review, I break down what works, what doesn't, and why Hope ultimately falls short of the great movie it occasionally threatens to become. 🎬 Is Hope worth seeing on the big screen?
