Description

Hurricane Rachel just hit 120 mph, made a U-turn 900 miles out in the Pacific, and is coming back at a coast that two hurricanes have already stripped bare in six weeks. Its swell reached Malibu last night. The ocean it is riding in on is standing 18 inches higher at San Diego than it was a year ago. The seawall on the Long Beach Peninsula is patched with plywood. And the sand that was supposed to stop the next swell is so far gone that the trucks sent to rebuild it cannot get onto the beach. The storm does not have to be a hurricane when it arrives. The last two were not either. The tide the weather service is most worried about is Sunday morning, at 9:49. IN THIS VIDEO • Thursday morning: the swell at Malibu, the San Pedro buoy, Long Beach's sandbag sites, the coastal flood advisories to Tuesday • The NHC clock: 70 mph and 895 miles out, the northeast turn in 24 hours, northern Baja late Saturday, Utah by Sunday night • Why a weakening storm is not a smaller problem: San Diego Bay 18 inches higher, tides a foot above the tables, 73.6°F water, an 83% chance of a record El Niño • The wall: Marie's holes, the plywood, the 24 evacuated homes, the $9.27 million of sand that has not been placed, Polo's 7.43 ft against Marie's 7.35 • Capistrano Beach's tally, Malibu's 31 homes, San Clemente's railroad, the 204 turtle eggs • Sunday's rain, wind and surf, from Ventura County to Phoenix to Ensenada • How Rachel got here: born in Polo's wake, 30 mph in a day to Category 3, five days adrift, the unexpected turn • 21 storms, 8 majors, three Category 5s, and Simon behind it • 1939, 1858 and Hilary: what a tropical storm has done to this coast before • What is observed and what is forecast, as of Thursday morning SOURCES NOAA National Hurricane Center, Advisories 1–45 and Discussions 1, 16, 20–22 and 45 (Sept 27–Oct 8, 2026) · NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard area forecast discussion and coastal flood advisory (Oct 7–8) · NWS San Diego area forecast discussion, coastal flood advisory and beach hazards statement (Oct 8) · NWS Phoenix area forecast discussion (Oct 8) · NOAA CO-OPS tide station 9410660 Los Angeles (predictions Oct 8–13) · NDBC/CDIP buoy 46222 San Pedro (Oct 8) · NOAA Climate Prediction Center via the Los Angeles Times · Los Angeles Times (Rong-Gong Lin II, Oct 8; Grace Toohey, Sept 9) · FOX 11 Los Angeles (Sept 23) · MyNewsLA (Oct 8) · ABC7 Los Angeles (Sept 28, Oct 7) · NBC Los Angeles (Sept 28) · FOX Weather (Sept 30–Oct 2) · Cal Fire (Bouquet Fire, Oct 7) · Protección Civil Baja California via El Imparcial (Oct 7) · Servicio Meteorológico Nacional via El Financiero (Oct 7) · Aquarium of the Pacific (Sept 25) · weather.com (Oct 2) This is a developing situation. Storm figures are from the National Hurricane Center's advisory of 2 AM PDT, Thursday, October 8, 2026, when Rachel was a tropical storm with no watches or warnings in effect for any coast. Tide heights, rainfall and wind for the weekend are forecasts and will change. As of that morning no flooding from Rachel had been reported in California. #HurricaneRachel #California #LongBeach #SouthernCalifornia #ElNino #CoastalFlooding #HighSurf #Malibu #DanaPoint #SanDiego #CrisisRadar
