Description

The Entire History of MADRID: Fixed-Camera Timelapse 12,000 Years in 11 Minutes | City Evolution Plaza Mayor is one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. But for most of history, it was just a muddy market on the edge of a fortress nobody had heard of. No royal court. No empire. No tourists. Just high Castilian plateau, wind and a patch of ground that kept changing hands - Visigoth, Muslim, Christian, Bourbon - until one day it became the ceremonial heart of the most powerful empire on earth. This is the full story of that ground. From the last ice age to the World Cup. 🎬 IN THIS VIDEO: ⬥ The ground beneath Plaza Mayor is cold, open plateau. Sparse grass, meltwater channels, no trace of human presence. The Meseta Central in the age of ice. ⬥ The first hunters make camp - temporary fires, stone tools, animal skins stretched on poles. They leave nothing permanent behind. ⬥ Small farming communities take root on the plateau. Roundhouses, grain pits, livestock. The crossroads that will one day become Plaza Mayor is just a dirt path between fields. ⬥ In the 9th century, Muhammad I builds a fortress called Mayrit on the ridge above the Manzanares - a watchtower for Toledo, the real city. The ground where Plaza Mayor will stand is outside the walls, a place people pass through. ⬥ Alfonso VI takes Mayrit from the Moors in 1085. The town changes hands without a battle. The market outside the walls keeps going. ⬥ Plaza del Arrabal - the market square at this exact location - becomes the busiest trading point in medieval Madrid. Grain, livestock, cloth, pottery. No architecture, just commerce and mud. ⬥ In 1561, Philip II moves the royal court to Madrid. Overnight, a modest Castilian town becomes the capital of an empire spanning half the world. The market square can't keep up. ⬥ Philip III commissions Juan Gómez de Mora to redesign the square. Construction runs from 1617 to 1619. On the 15th of May 1620, Plaza Mayor is inaugurated - with a ceremony beatifying Isidro Labrador, Madrid's patron saint. ⬥ The square becomes the stage for everything: bullfights, royal ceremonies, public executions and the great auto-da-fé of the 30th of June 1680 - one of the largest in Spanish history. ⬥ Three fires. 1631, 1672 and the great blaze of 1790 that destroys a third of the square. Each time, Madrid rebuilds. ⬥ Juan de Villanueva redesigns the square after 1790 - lower facades, unified arches, closed corners. The shape that exists today is his. ⬥ The equestrian statue of Philip III arrives at the center in 1848. For the first time, the square has the composition it still holds. ⬥ Napoleon's troops march through. The Constitution of 1812 is celebrated here. Then the Restoration. Then the Republic. Then Franco. Plaza Mayor absorbs every change of regime and keeps standing. ⬥ In 1967, the square is closed to traffic and a underground car park is built beneath it. The cobblestones return. Plaza Mayor becomes a pedestrian space for the first time in its history. ⬥ In 1992, Carlos Franco paints the allegorical murals on Casa de la Panadería - the vivid mythological scenes that now define the square's most recognizable facade. ⬥ In 2017, Madrid celebrates the 400th anniversary of the square's construction. ⬥ 2026. The square is full again. Spain has just won the World Cup. 📍 THE LOCATION: Fixed camera position: Plaza Mayor, Madrid, Spain. Cinematography: A single, unmoving wide-angle camera remains fixed in the exact same location for the entire 12,000 year journey, capturing the transformation of this high Castilian plateau from post-glacial grassland to one of the great civic squares of Europe. 🔔 Like if history like this deserves to exist.
