Description

The 2027 Social Security raise is 3.6% โ€” about $75 more a month for the average retiree ($2,095 โ†’ $2,170). But for 5 groups of people, the money that lands in the bank in January will be LESS. In this video I show you each group, with the real government page on screen: Medicare Part B, tax on Social Security (a rule from 1984 that was never updated), federal retirees on FERS who get only 2.6%, SSI and food stamps, and HUD / Section 8 tenants whose rent goes up with the raise. Plus what to do about each one, and how to see your real January amount before January. โฑ๏ธ CHAPTERS 0:00 The 2027 raise is official: 3.6% (your quick math) 0:36 Group 1: Everyone on Medicare Part B 1:58 Before group two 2:13 Group 2: Tax on Social Security โ€” the 1984 rule 3:50 Group 3: Federal retirees on FERS get 2.6%, not 3.6% 5:00 Group 4: SSI and food stamps 6:50 Group 5: HUD and Section 8 tenants โ€” rent goes up 8:20 How to see your real January amount (before January) 9:13 Checklist โ€” screenshot this 9:47 The bottom line ๐Ÿ’ต YOUR RAISE IN 10 SECONDS About $36 for every $1,000 of your check. โ€ข $1,000 โ†’ about +$36 โ€ข $1,500 โ†’ about +$54 โ€ข $2,000 โ†’ about +$72 ๐Ÿ‘ฅ THE 5 GROUPS WHO GET LESS 1. On Medicare Part B: $202.90 now, about $209.50 expected in 2027. Plan on about $7 less than your raise. High income and pay extra for Medicare (IRMAA)? Hold harmless doesn't protect you. Income dropped after retiring or losing a spouse? Ask for form SSA-44. 2. Tax on Social Security: the $25,000 (single) / $32,000 (couple) lines were set in 1984 and never raised. Every raise pushes more people over. 8 states also tax Social Security: CO, CT, MN, MT, NM, RI, UT, VT. 3. Federal retirees on FERS: when prices rise more than 3%, the FERS pension raise is 1 point less โ€” 2.6% for 2027. Most FERS retirees under 62 get no pension raise. CSRS gets the full 3.6%. 4. SSI: maximum goes from $994 to $1,029 (+$35). Get SSI and Social Security together? Your total goes up only about $35. Food stamps can drop about 30 cents per extra dollar. Age 60+? Medical costs over $35 a month can raise your food stamps โ€” report them. 5. HUD / Section 8 / public housing: rent is about 30% of adjusted income, so a $75 raise can mean about $22 more rent at your yearly review. Bring your medical receipts โ€” they can lower your rent. โœ… CHECKLIST 1. On Medicare? Plan on about $7 less than your raise. 2. Tax on Social Security? Talk to your tax preparer before Dec 31. 3. Federal retiree on FERS? Your pension raise is 2.6%. 4. On SSI and 60+? Report your medical costs to the food stamp office. 5. In HUD or Section 8 housing? Bring your medical receipts to your income review. + Set up my Social Security by November 18 to see your real amount online in late November. ๐Ÿ“Œ OFFICIAL 2027 NUMBERS (SSA fact sheet, Oct 14, 2026) โ€ข COLA: 3.6% โ€ข Average retired worker: $2,095 โ†’ $2,170 โ€ข SSI: $1,029 individual / $1,544 couple โ€ข Earnings limit under full retirement age: $25,560 โ€ข January 2027 payments: Jan 13 / 20 / 27 by birthday; SSI's January payment arrives Thu, Dec 31, 2026 (not a bonus) ๐Ÿ“„ SOURCES SHOWN IN THIS VIDEO โ€ข SSA 2027 COLA Fact Sheet โ€” ssa.gov โ€ข CMS 2026 Medicare Part B premium โ€” cms.gov โ€ข Form SSA-44 โ€” ssa.gov โ€ข IRS Publication 915 โ€” irs.gov โ€ข SSA History: Taxation of Social Security Benefits โ€” ssa.gov โ€ข FERS cost-of-living law, 5 U.S.C. 8462 โ€” govinfo.gov โ€ข SSI income rules โ€” ssa.gov โ€ข Food stamp (SNAP) medical deduction, 7 CFR 273.9 โ€” ecfr.gov โ€ข HUD rent rule, 24 CFR 5.628 โ€” ecfr.gov ๐Ÿ“ž WHERE TO CALL โ€ข Social Security: 1-800-772-1213 โ€ข Medicare: 1-800-MEDICARE โ€ข Your local housing office or food stamp office for income reviews โ€ข Social Security will never call, text or email asking for your information about the raise.
